The History of Fireworks
Bright, colorful displays are bursting in the night sky. The revolution of fireworks
The first firecrackers were created accidentally by the Chinese in 200 BC. A mixture of sulfur, charcoal and potassium nitrate was not the solution for the immortality they were in search of, but as a result, gunpowder was born. Fast forward to July 2, 1776, two days before the Declaration of Independence was signed, John Adams wrote this letter to his wife:
"This day will be the most memorable in the history of America," he predicted. "I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival... It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade... bonfires and illuminations [fireworks]... from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore."
On July 4, 1777, the first anniversary of America's countryhood, "illuminations" lit up the sky, but not with the colors we see today. This was invented by Italian craftsmen sixty years later.
What we enjoy today was collectively created by various cultures and is still a symbol of our freedom.
