Big Y Foods, Inc. is one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England. Big Y operates 94 locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut including 75 supermarkets, Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors, Big Y Express Fresh Market and 17 Big Y Express gas and convenience locations with over 10,000 employees. Big Y has been recognized by Forbes as a Best-in-State Employer in Massachusetts and Connecticut, as well as both Newsweek’s America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity and for Women. Founded in 1936 by brothers Paul and Gerald D’Amour, the store was named after an intersection in Chicopee, Massachusetts where two roads converge to form a “Y”.

Big Y named Forbes Best in State for 6th year in a row
Ranked Best State Employer for MA and CT since 2019
SPRINGFIELD, MA [Novemeber 12, 2024] – For the sixth year in a row, Big Y has been recognized as a Forbes “Best-In-State Employer” for 2024. Forbes America’s Best-In-State Employers have been identified across all industries based upon an independent survey of employees who anonymously recommend their employers for this award. Employers, such as Big Y, neither have the knowledge of which employees are polled nor do they have the ability to influence the results in any way. According to Forbes, employees are asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employers to friends and family. Employees are also asked to give their opinions on a series of statements surrounding work-related topics such as working conditions, salary, potential for development and company image regarding their current employer. Big Y’s award spans 25 different industries.
