  • Sustainable Seafood

    Sustainable Seafood What is sustainable seafood? Sustainable seafood is seafood from a source that can maintain or increase its production in the future without jeopardizing the ecosystem. Sources are verified by independent organizations. What does Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified mean? The fishery must be conducted in a way that does not lead to over-fishing or depletion of the target stock. Fishing operations must be undertaken in a manner that minimizes fishery-related impact to the ecosystem on which the fishery depends. The fishery must be subject to an effective management system that promotes responsible and sustainable fishing. Two independent organizations support Big Y's sustainable seafood. Big Y has teamed with fishermen and suppliers from the local waters of the Gulf of Maine and all regions of the globe to bring you the best seafood for your family in the best way possible for the environment. Just look for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the Gulf of Maine Responsibly Harvested logos in our seafood case. Marine Stewardship Council The MSC has developed standards for sustainable fishing and seafood traceability. Both standards meet the world's toughest best practice guidelines and are helping to transform global seafood markets. www.msc.org Gulf of Maine Research Institute The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) is an independent, non-advocacy research entity focused on catalyzing solutions to the complex challenges of ocean stewardship and economic growth in the Gulf of Maine bioregion. www.gmri.org Our offerings of Sustainable Seafood are growing weekly and already include: King Salmon Coho Salmon Pacific Frozen Cod Canadian Frozen Flounder Icelandic Fresh Haddock Canadian Fresh Haddock Fresh Cod Fresh Haddock Fresh Sea Scallops Sockeye Salmon Best Aquaculture Practices Certified The BAP has guiding principles for responsible, sustainable aquaculture. bap.gaalliance.org What Does BAP Do? Pharmacy Notice of Privacy Practices This notice describes how medical information about you may be used and disclosed and how you can get access to this information. Please review it carefully. The Pharmacy is required by law to maintain the privacy of Protected Health Information (“PHI”) and to provide individuals with notice of our legal duties and privacy practices with respect to PHI. PHI is information that may identify you and that relates to your past, present or future physical or mental health or condition and related health care services. This Notice of Privacy Practices (“Notice”) describes how we may use and disclose PHI to carry out treatment, payment or health care operations and for other specified purposes that are permitted or required by law. The Notice also describes your rights with respect to PHI about you. The Pharmacy is required to follow the terms of this Notice. We will not use or disclose PHI about you without your written authorization, except as described in this Notice. We reserve the right to change our practices and this Notice and to make the new Notice effective for all PHI we maintain. In the event of a material change in this Notice, we will post revised notices at each of our Pharmacies and on our website at www.bigy.com/services/policies. Your Health Information Rights You have the following rights with respect to PHI about you: Obtain a paper copy of the Notice upon request. You may request a copy of the Notice at any time. Even if you have agreed to receive the Notice electronically, you are still entitled to a paper copy. To obtain a paper copy, contact: Privacy Officer, Big Y Foods, Inc., 2145 Roosevelt Ave., Springfield, MA 01102. Request a restriction on certain uses and disclosures of PHI. You have the right to request additional restrictions on our use or disclosure of PHI about you by sending a written request to Privacy Officer, Big Y Foods, Inc., 2145 Roosevelt Ave., Springfield, MA 01102. We are not required to agree to your request, however, unless otherwise required by law, we must permit a request for a restriction on disclosures to a health plan for purposes of payment or health care operations where the PHI pertains solely to a health care item or service for which the health care provider involved has been paid out of pocket in full. Inspect and obtain a copy of PHI. You have the right to access and copy PHI about you contained in a designated record set for as long as the Pharmacy maintains the PHI. The designated record set usually will include prescription and billing records. To inspect or copy PHI about you, you must send a written request to Privacy Officer, Big Y Foods, Inc., 2145 Roosevelt Ave., Springfield, MA 01102. Your request will be acted upon within 30 days, unless we provide you with notification in writing that an extension of up to 30 days is needed. If you wish, you may request, in writing on a form provided by the pharmacy, that your health information is directed to someone other than yourself. We may charge you a fee for the costs of copying, mailing and supplies that are necessary to fulfill your request. We may deny your request to inspect and copy in certain circumstances. If you are denied access to PHI about you, you may request that the denial be reviewed. Request an amendment of PHI. If you feel that PHI we maintain about you is incomplete or incorrect, you may request that we amend it. You may request an amendment for as long as we maintain the PHI. To request an amendment, you must send a written request to Privacy Officer, Big Y Foods, Inc., 2145 Roosevelt Ave., Springfield, MA 01102. You must include a reason that supports your request. In certain cases, we may deny your request for amendment. If we deny your request for amendment, you have the right to file a statement of disagreement with the decision and we may give a rebuttal to your statement. Receive an accounting of disclosures of PHI. You have the right to receive an accounting of the disclosures we have made of PHI about you after April 14, 2003. The accounting will exclude certain disclosures, such as disclosures for treatment, payment, or health care operations, disclosures made directly to you, disclosures you authorize, disclosures to friends or family members involved in your care, and disclosures for notification purposes. The right to receive an accounting is subject to certain other exceptions, restrictions, and limitations. To request an accounting, you must submit a request in writing to: Privacy Officer, Big Y Foods, Inc., 2145 Roosevelt Ave., Springfield, MA 01102. Your request must specify the time period, but may not be longer than six years. The first accounting you request within a 12 month period will be provided free of charge, but you may be charged for the cost of providing additional accountings. We will notify you of the cost involved and you may choose to withdraw or modify your request at that time. Request communications of PHI by alternative means or at alternative locations. • Baby Y What's the Deal About Folate and Folic Acid?

    What's the Deal About Folate and Folic Acid? Folate is a type of B vitamin that can be found naturally in foods, added to fortified foods and in supplement form. It serves a crucial role in your body by helping create new cells. In babies, this role is particularly important because they need folate to rapidly develop brain and spinal cord cells. When a mother does not get enough folate in her meal plan, her baby can be born with neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly. Spina bifida is the incomplete development of the spinal cord. Anencephaly is the underdevelopment of the brain. To prevent these conditions from taking place, doctors recommend women consume dietary sources of folate and its synthetic form, folic acid, found in supplements and fortified foods. In the United States, there are 3,000 cases of neural tube defects each year. Therefore, it is important for women of childbearing age to meet guidelines for intake of folate. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all women consume at least 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid per day and the recommendation increases to 600 mcg during pregnancy. Women who are pregnant, or could become pregnant, should consume folate and folic acid from a variety of sources including fruits, vegetables, fortified grains, beans, peas and a multivitamin supplement. The following foods are particularly high in folate: FOOD SERVING FOLATE IN MICROGRAMS (MCG) Peas (chickpeas, black-eyed), cooked ¾ cup 138-263 mcg Beans (pinto, navy, black, lima, kidney), cooked ¾ cup 157-218 mcg Asparagus, boiled 4 spears 89 mcg Enriched spaghetti ½ cup 83 mcg Romaine lettuce 1 cup 64 mcg Avocado, sliced ½ cup 59 mcg Spinach, raw 1 cup 58 mcg Orange, small fresh 1 fruit 29 mcg However, keep in mind that the absorption of vitamins and minerals from food can vary. On average, 80% of folate found in food is absorbed by the body, so the best way for women of childbearing age to meet their needs is to consume folate from foods and folic acid from fortified sources and multivitamins. To learn more information about folate, visit the Office of Dietary Supplements website. ;
  • Living Well Eating Smart Lose Weight

    Lose Weight If you want to lose weight, there are a couple key questions to ask yourself: Why? Make sure you figure out exactly why you want to lose the weight- it should be for you and no one else. How much? Don't sabotage your efforts by holding yourself to an “ideal” weight based upon what others look like or what you looked in your “younger” years. Set a weight that is realistic, healthy and comfortable for you. How fast? This is a big one- the slower you lose the weight, the easier it will be to maintain. Losing 2-3 pounds per week is the fastest you should go. Any faster than that and you are losing water, as well as not eating enough calories to maintain your body's protein stores. How? When it comes to weight loss, lifestyle changes are what works- not a diet! Though progressing slowly can be discouraging, setting short-term, achievable goals are the best bet for achieving and maintaining your weight loss. Tips For Losing Losing weight is a matter of burning more calories than you eat. Be careful though, if you cut your calories back too far you could send your body into “survival” mode (which could cause your body to store what you eat as fat). Do not eat less than 1,500 calories per day without the supervision of a registered dietitian nutritionist and physician. Consider: How many calories you currently eat- If you are overeating calories, cutting daily calories back by 300-500 is an option. If you are eating enough calories, you may just need to add in exercise. How active you are- If you can do it, exercise is the perfect second arm to a healthy lifestyle and weight loss plan. You don't have to become a marathon runner, but the more you move, the more you lose. Plus, the more calories you burn, the more calories you can eat! Keep Track Before making any changes to the foods you choose or the activities you do, keep track of a typical week worth of meals and activities on MyPlate SuperTracker. This will allow you to record and analyze your current behaviors. Remember Any attempt for weight loss can only go so far without having healthy lifestyle behaviors overall. • Living Well Eating Smart Get Moving

    Get Moving Your body was meant to move. Whether you like to dance, hike, walk in the park or ski, let it do its thing! Daily physical activity does more than help manage your weight. It builds strong bones, maintains muscle mass, helps burn off stress, keeps your core muscles in check (important for balance), makes you feel good about yourself and maintains a strong heart. What type and how often? If you do not participate in any form of physical activity, but would like to begin, it's essential to start off small and slow. First and foremost, consult a physician before you start working on the three components of physical fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strengthening and flexibility. Cardio If you do not participate in any form of physical activity, but would like to begin, it's essential to start off small and slow. First and foremost, consult a physician before you start working on the three components of physical fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strengthening, and flexibility. Cardiovascular endurance is simply participating in activities that increase your heart rate to improve the strength of your heart. The 2015 Dietary Guidelines state aerobic activity [i.e.: cardio] should be performed in episodes of at least 10 minutes, and preferably, it should be spread throughout the week. Cardio activities can vary depend on your current level of fitness and mobility: anything from walking to playing pick up basketball. If you are looking for ways to increase your cardio fitness, think of activities you enjoy rather than what you think you should do. This will help to maintain being active versus ending within a week! Start off small- 5-10 minutes for the first few days or week. Start off slow- at an intensity where you are just breaking a sweat. If you can hold a conversation without losing breath when you are active, you are at the appropriate level of intensity. Once you can handle this duration and intensity, slowly increase one or both (maybe to 15 minutes where the last 5 minutes you are sweating, though not profusely). Strengthening Muscular strengthening is what we think of when we lift weights or do push ups, pull ups and crunches. If done properly, increasing your muscular strength will not only help improve your metabolism, make your body feel tighter and slimmer, it will also help protect your joints such as your knees. The 2015 Dietary Guidelines state adults should include muscle-strengthening activities that involve all major muscle groups on 2 or more days a week. The best way to begin a weight lifting regimen is to meet with a certified personal trainer for a personalized routine and to learn proper technique. If you cannot afford to join a gym or meet with a trainer, using your body's weight, such as doing push ups or squats at home, and common household items like cans of soup is sufficient to get started. Start off small- don't lift weights that you cannot do comfortably while maintaining your form for 10-15 repetitions. Start off slow- the slower you go, the more you work your muscles. Also, begin with only one set of 10-15. Once you get to a point where one set is a breeze, either increase the weight or number of sets but not both at the same time! Flexibility Flexibility is the most common overlooked key to fitness. Being flexible helps protect joints, lengthen muscles and the process helps relax your entire body. To increase flexibility, incorporate stretching into your daily routine. It is best to stretch warm muscles (i.e.: after you work out or do a warm up) rather than trying to stretch them cold. The more often you stretch, the greater your range of motion will be. Start off small- stretch only to the point of slight tension, never to pain! Start off slow and remain slow- hold your stretches for at least 30 seconds to allow your muscles to relax entirely before moving on to the next stretch. For more information on becoming active, speak to a certified personal trainer and visit reputable websites like the American College of Sports Medicine, American Council on Exercise and President's Council on Physical Fitness. How often? Being physically active each day means participating in activity above your normal daily activities. Here are the Physical Activity recommendations from the USDA 2015 Dietary Guidelines for adult's age 18 to 64 years old: For substantial health benefits, adults should do at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) a week of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity. For additional and more extensive health benefits, adults should increase their aerobic physical activity to 300 minutes (5 hours) a week of moderate-intensity, or 150 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity. Additional health benefits are gained by engaging in physical activity beyond this amount. ;
  • Living Well Eating Smart Nutrition 101

    Nutrition 101 Following a meal plan that is full of variety and Food Groups is essential for long term weight management- and good health. Below are some of our favorite nutrition tips by nutrient to get you started on a path to balanced nutrition. Just remember to start slow. If you see a few different practices you would like to make your own, be sure to follow these steps to success: Start with short-term goals one month at a time. Only focus on 2-3 changes each month. Develop an incentive for every goal. Keep an ongoing log of your success on your calendar or in a diary. At the end of each month, reassess and recommit to new or redesigned goals. Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are the body's preferred source of energy. We obtain carbohydrates primarily from four Food Groups- Grains, Fruits, Vegetables and Dairy. To meet daily Grain Food Group goals, choose high fiber, whole grains. For the Fruit and Vegetable Food Groups, make varying color and texture the focus of your choices. Utilize the Vegetable Food Group the most, as vegetables provide about 2/3 less carbohydrates per serving than fruits. When working toward your Fruit Food Group goals, enjoy whole fruits and 100% fruit juice most often. In the Dairy Food Group, watch out for added sugar in milk, yogurt and frozen desserts. Remember, 4 grams sugar equals 1 teaspoon sugar. So, if your favorite yogurt's Nutrition Facts Label lists 24 grams sugar, you're eating roughly 3 teaspoons added sugar after accounting for about 12 grams of sugar coming naturally from the lactose in the milk. For cheese, choose lowfat versions, control portion sizes of high fat versions and use grated varieties for cheesy flavor without extra fat. Protein Protein rebuilds tissues, maintains hormones and is found predominantly in the Proteins Food and Dairy Food groups. Protein is essential to eat, but should not make up the majority of what we eat. Since protein-rich food is often laden with fat, choose lean protein sources daily. Bake, broil, sauté and grill lean meat sources like fish, chicken and turkey without the skin, ground turkey breast and lean cuts of beef and pork. Incorporate plant-based proteins into meals on a daily basis with pulses (dried beans, peas, chickpeas and lentils), soy, tofu, nuts and seeds. Although nuts and seeds do contain fat, their fats are heart healthy. Simply control portion size of nuts so their calories don't affect your waistline. Fats Fat is used for insulation, temperature regulation and protection of organs. Just like protein, fat is necessary for our health but should not make up the majority of your meals. Make plant fats (canola oil, olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds) and omega-3's from fish the main source of fat in your meals. Watch out for saturated fat and trans fats by limiting the amount of high fat meats, deep fried foods and desserts you eat on a regular basis. Eat at least two, 4-6 ounce servings of fish each week. Pregnant mothers and children should enjoy low mercury fish like salmon, light Albacore tuna, sardines, and herring most often. Water, Vitamins & Minerals Proper hydration and meeting vitamin and mineral goals on a daily basis will help you feel ready to tackle the day. Let thirst be your guide for staying hydrated with water, caffeine-free and low-sugar beverages. To fill in vitamin or mineral blanks from day-to-day, take a basic daily multivitamin with minerals. Meal Planning Planning your meals ahead of time is often the best way to achieve your nutrition goals. By eating on a regular schedule each day, you'll help curb cravings, control portion sizes and maintain energy. Whether you're trying to maintain, lose or gain weight following the schedule below will help you meet your goals: Breakfast Meal- Made up of at least 4 Food Groups and provides a source of carbohydrates, protein and fat. A.M. Snack- A small quantity of food with carbohydrates, protein and fat to help meet Food Group goals. Lunch Meal- Made up of at least 4 Food Groups and provides a source of carbohydrates, protein and fat. Mid-Day Snack- A small quantity of food with carbohydrates, protein and fat to help meet Food Group goals. Dinner Meal- Made up of at least 4 Food Groups and provides a source of carbohydrates, protein and fat. *Workout Snacks- If a workout session happens before a meal or snack is consumed, make sure to eat a small snack consisting of carbohydrates and protein beforehand. This snack will help you feel and perform your best. If a meal is not going to be consumed within an hour after the conclusion of a workout, make sure to follow up with a small snack predominantly consisting of carbohydrates and protein. MyPlate To learn what your calorie goals are for weight gain, meeting with a registered dietitian nutritionist for one-on-one coaching is your best bet. They will be able to take into consideration your medical history, likes and dislikes and develop a plan of success with you. To find a dietitian to work with, contact your local hospital or visit the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and click on “Find an Expert.” In the meantime, MyPlate is a good starting point. MyPlate will estimate your average calorie need for maintaining, losing or gaining weight and show you how to achieve this goal one Food Group at a time. It was developed by the USDA as a revision of the old Food Guide Pyramid. The greatest aspect of MyPlate is that it can be tailored to meet most healthy adult's nutrition needs. • Baby Y Preventing Iron Deficiency

    Preventing Iron Deficiency Feeling sluggish during pregnancy? You may need more iron. Do you feel like you're more tired or light-headed than you used to be before you were pregnant? While some amount of sluggishness is normal during pregnancy, feeling this way on a regular basis might be caused by iron deficiency. Since iron plays a role in transporting oxygen to your body, a deficiency in this important mineral can make you feel tired and run down. During pregnancy, you need about two times the amount of iron than you require prior to becoming pregnant in order to supply blood and oxygen to you and your baby. For this reason, women are more likely to become iron deficient during pregnancy, which is why routine iron testing is done during prenatal check-ups. If you learn you have low iron levels, have no fear. In addition to your prenatal supplement, iron is found in a variety of food sources. The best sources of iron include red meat, fish and poultry. Other sources include beans, eggs, vegetables like peas and spinach, as well as iron-fortified products like cereals and breads. Need inspiration? A great iron-rich meal would be roasted chicken and chickpeas tossed with whole grain pasta, spinach and red peppers. Another tip: What you eat with your iron supplement may affect its absorption. Calcium-rich foods, like milk and cheese, reduce your body's ability to absorb iron. On the other hand, vitamin C helps to increase iron absorption. So, instead of taking your prenatal vitamin with a glass of milk, have it with a glass of orange juice. That said; continue to get your bone-strengthening calcium throughout the day with foods like yogurt and cottage cheese. Taking these precautions will help ensure your iron levels do not fall too low so you have the energy needed to get through your day. ;
  • Pharmacy Flu Shot FAQ

    Flu Shot FAQ Why should people get vaccinated against the flu? Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others. Over a period of 31 seasons between 1976 and 2007, estimates of flu-associated deaths in the United States range from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people. During a regular flu season, about 90 percent of deaths occur in people 65 years and older. The "seasonal flu season" in the United States can begin as early as October and last as late as May. During this time, flu viruses are circulating in the population. An annual seasonal flu vaccine (either the flu shot or the nasal-spray flu vaccine) is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and lessen the chance that you will spread it to others. When more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu can spread through that community. Source: http://www.cdc.gov How do flu vaccines work? Flu vaccines (the flu shot and the nasal-spray flu vaccine (LAIV)) cause antibodies to develop in the body about two weeks after vaccination. These antibodies provide protection against infection with the viruses that are in the vaccine. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against three influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. Three kinds of influenza viruses commonly circulate among people today: influenza B viruses, influenza A (H1N1) viruses, and influenza A (H3N2) viruses. Each year, one flu virus of each kind is used to produce seasonal influenza vaccine. Source: http://www.cdc.gov Who Should Get Vaccinated This Season? Everyone who is at least 6 months of age should get a flu vaccine this season. It's especially important for some people to get vaccinated. Those people include the following: People who are at high risk of developing serious complications like pneumonia if they get sick with the flu. This includes: People who have certain medical conditions including asthma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease. Pregnant women. People 65 years and older People who live with or care for others who are high risk of developing serious complications. This includes: household contacts and caregivers of people with certain medical conditions including asthma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease. Source: http://www.cdc.gov Is there anyone who should not get the vaccine? Talk to your health care provider about vaccination if you have: A severe allergy to chicken eggs A history of severe reaction to a flu vaccination A moderate-to-severe illness with a fever (you should wait until you are better to get the vaccine) A history of Guillain–Barré Syndrome (a severe paralytic illness, also called GBS) Source: http://www.flu.gov When Should I Get Vaccinated? CDC recommends that people get vaccinated against influenza as soon as flu season vaccine becomes available in their community. Influenza seasons are unpredictable, and can begin as early as October. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against the flu. Flu vaccine is produced by private manufacturers, so availability depends on when production is completed. If everything goes as indicated by manufacturers, shipments are likely to begin in August and continue throughout September and October until all vaccine is distributed. At this time, some vaccine providers may have exhausted their vaccine supplies, while others may have remaining supplies of vaccine. People seeking vaccination may need to call more than one provider to locate vaccine. The flu vaccine locator at http://vaccine.healthmap.orgExternal Web Site Icon may be helpful. Source: http://www.cdc.gov Why Do I Need a Flu Vaccine Every Year? A flu vaccine is needed every year because flu viruses are constantly changing. It's not unusual for new flu viruses to appear each year. The flu vaccine is formulated each year to keep up with the flu viruses as they change. Also, multiple studies conducted over different seasons and across vaccine types and influenza virus subtypes have shown that the body's immunity to influenza viruses (acquired either through natural infection or vaccination) declines over time. Getting vaccinated each year provides the best protection against influenza throughout flu season. Source: http://www.cdc.gov Does flu vaccine work right away? No. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against influenza virus infection. In the meantime, you are still at risk for getting the flu. That's why it's better to get vaccinated early in the fall, before the flu season really gets under way. Source: http://www.cdc.gov Can I get seasonal flu even though I got a flu vaccine this year? Yes. The ability of flu vaccine to protect a person depends on two things: 1) the age and health status of the person getting vaccinated, and 2) the similarity or “match” between the virus strains in the vaccine and those circulating in the community. If the viruses in the vaccine and the influenza viruses circulating in the community are closely matched, vaccine effectiveness is higher. If they are not closely matched, vaccine effectiveness can be reduced. However, it's important to remember that even when the viruses are not closely matched, the vaccine can still protect many people and prevent flu-related complications. Such protection is possible because antibodies made in response to the vaccine can provide some protection (called cross-protection) against different, but related strains of influenza viruses. • UMASS Student Farm

    Big Y has partnered with the "Student Farm Enterprise" to bring its customers local organic produce. The "Student Farm Enterprise" is run by University of Massachusetts students from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture. As part of their program, each student is responsible for three different types of crops and creates a plan for how best to grow them. The farm program gives students the experience of running their own farm since they plant, harvest, clean, package and sell the vegetables they grow locally to Big Y. The Amherst Big Y World Class Market, at 175 University Drive, sells organic beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, kale, leeks, onions, red and gold potatoes, sweet potatoes, swiss chard, and butternut squash grown by the "Student Farm Enterprise." Student farmers started the "Student Farm Enterprise" six years ago. The program started with only two members growing kale. Today, the program includes twelve to fifteen students per year and has grown to over ten markets and thirty-six crops. The program allows students to be able to take what they learned in the classroom and apply it to their fields. After they graduate, many students have chosen to continue to work at local farms. Big Y has been committed to sustaining local farming and supporting local farmers since its founding over 75 years ago. UMass Amherst Student Farm Facts Today the UMass Amherst Student Farm engages 12 to 15 students per year who produce 36 different certified organic vegetables on six acres of land, for 10 different markets. These include Earthfoods Café, UMass Dining Services and Catering, People's Market, the Faculty Club and Greeno Sub Shop on campus. In summer, the farm supports six students, who can choose to either receive academic credit or to be paid for their labor. All income goes to support the program, for example to pay for next summer's labor and other expenses needed to run the farm. Each fall, students who are accepted into the program sign up for one five-credit farm practicum course per semester. When they begin most have never worked on a farm, driven a tractor or planted a field. Farm planning starts each spring semester with students estimating fall harvest demand in pounds and working back from harvest goals to make a production detailed plan that starts with seed orders and includes estimated losses, germination rate and fertility, organic pest management needs and costs. Each student is responsible for developing a production plan for three crops. It's a very fruitful partnership for students and the supermarket. People are really interested in supporting local agriculture, and UMass students have been very gratified that consumers are beginning to ask for some of their crops, like spinach, broccoli and butternut squash. The quality is high. The UMass collaboration with Big Y has added so much to the curriculum. Students learn that they've got to deliver what they've promised. They learn about quality control and pricing. Students visit the supermarket's distribution center and they learn so much about the produce industry and how it works in the region, nationally and even internationally. The course really opens their eyes to how food is produced, transported and delivered in this country. Big Y is a big part of that overall education. It's a valuable, hands-on opportunity to experience how local farms can actually work with a wholesale operation. The UMASS Student Farm Enterprise has grown considerably! The latest offshoot involves selling produce at local Big Y World Class Market in Amherst. Amanda Brown, Jason Silverman and Brooke Dillon give a little explanation of the program and their experience of learning hands on. ;
