  • Baby Y - Tips for Staying Energized

Tips for Staying Energized through the Holidays During pregnancy, you may experience nuisances like breathlessness; aching legs and back; heartburn; difficulty sleeping; lack of energy and ankle swelling. Add in carrying 20-30 pounds more than you're used to – and everyday activities become slightly harder to accomplish. Though frustrating at first, it's important to listen to your body, slow down and ask for help. Not sure how you'll survive the holidays? Use these tips to get through the final stretch: Minimize time spent at busy malls and shopping centers with the purchase of gift cards and online shopping. If you do venture out, go shopping with a family member or friend. They can help carry larger items you may end up purchasing. Look for retailers that offer free wrapping. Wear comfortable shoes for walking like sneakers or flats. Carry bottled water and a snack (granola bar, dried fruit, trail mix) when on the go. Enjoy a moderate caffeine boost with coffee, tea or espresso. Studies show moderate caffeine intake of less than 300 milligrams (mg) per day, equal to about 2-3 cups of coffee, is safe during pregnancy. If erring on the side of caution, no more than 200 mg per day is preferred by March of Dimes. Continue following a balanced meal plan. What you eat dictates how you feel. So, if your meals are less than ideal, you'll feel it. Opt for healthier items when eating out like baked potatoes; salads; grilled versus fried items; and milk, 100% juice or water in place of sugary drinks. For holiday parties, offer to bring dishes that are easy to prepare. You may traditionally cook the ham – but this year, leave it to someone else. Make time for yourself at the end of the day. Read, watch your favorite holiday movie or take a soothing, warm bath.
  • Food Safety Tips

4 Easy Lessons in Safe Food Handling Food handling safety risks at home are more common than most people think. The four easy lessons of CLEAN, SEPARATE, COOK, and CHILL can help prevent harmful bacteria from making your family sick. To find out more about food safety, visit befoodsafe.org. Clean. Bacteria can spread throughout the kitchen and get on hands, cutting boards, knives, and countertops. Frequent cleaning can keep that from happening. Wash your hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds before and after handling food. Wash cutting boards, dishes, utensils and counter tops with hot soapy water after preparing each food item and before you go on to the next food. Consider using paper towels to clean up kitchen surfaces. If you use cloth towels wash them often in the hot cycle of your washing machine. Rinse fresh fruits and vegetables under running tap water, including those with skins and rinds that are not eaten. Rub firm-skin fruits and vegetables under running tap water or scrub with a clean vegetable brush while rinsing with running tap water. Cook. Even for experienced cooks, the improper heating and preparation of food means bacteria can survive. Use a food thermometer to measure the internal temperature of cooked foods. Make sure that meat, poultry, egg dishes, casseroles and other foods are cooked to the internal temperature shown in the chart. Cook ground meat or ground poultry until it reaches a safe internal temperature. Color is not a reliable indicator of doneness. Cook eggs until the yolk and white are firm. Only use recipes in which eggs are cooked or heated thoroughly. Bring sauces, soups and gravy to a boil when reheating. Separate. Cross-contamination is how bacteria spreads. Keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood and their juices away from ready-to-eat foods. Use one cutting board for fresh produce and a separate one for raw meat, poultry and seafood. Separate raw meat, poultry, seafood and eggs from other foods in your grocery shopping cart, grocery bags and in your refrigerator. Never place cooked food on a plate that previously held raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs. Chill. Bacteria spreads fastest at temperatures between 40 °F and 140 °F, so chilling food properly is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of foodborne illness. Chill leftovers and takeout foods within 2 hours. Keep the fridge at 40 °F or below and use an appliance thermometer to check the temperature. Refrigerate or freeze meat, poultry, eggs and other perishables as soon as you get them home from the store. Never defrost food at room temperature. Food must be kept at a safe temperature during thawing. There are three safe ways to defrost food: in the refrigerator, in cold water, and in the microwave. Food thawed in cold water or in the microwave should be cooked immediately.

  • Baby Y - Introducing Cows Milk

Introducing Cows Milk For the first 12 months of life, babies receive their primary source of nutrition through breastmilk and/or formula. After their first birthday, they're ready to transition to whole cow's milk in addition to the variety of solid foods they've been enjoying up to this point – from vegetables, fruits and grains to protein foods, yogurt and cheese. While some parents may be eager to introduce whole milk before baby's first birthday, there are good reasons to hold off. If given too early, baby's digestive system may not be ready to fully (or easily) break it down. In addition, cow's milk lacks enough of the important nutrients necessary for baby's rapid growth during the first year of life, including iron and a balanced combination of fats. When ready to offer milk, work off baby's cues to determine how quickly you may make this change. Some little ones won't bat an eye at this new source of nourishment while it will be more of a gradual process for others. If your child has a tight connection to his bottle, focus on switching to whole milk during the day to begin. Gradually move toward transitioning, or reducing, morning and night breastmilk or formula feedings, since those are often the hardest to give up. Between 1-2 years, toddlers need approximately 16 ounces, or 2 cups, whole milk per day. If offering other dairy foods such as yogurt and cheese, be sure to count those servings towards their total of 2 cups dairy foods per day. It is recommended to serve milk in a cup rather than bottle so your child strengthens oral reflexes; lowers risk for cavities and doesn't have excess milk intake, which can fill tiny tummies and potentially lead to nutrient deficiencies if milk displaces other foods on a regular basis. If your baby is unable to tolerate cow's milk, talk to your child's pediatrician about nutritious alternatives. They may also recommend introducing reduced fat (2%) milk in place of whole milk if there is family history of conditions such as obesity or heart disease.

  • Baby Y - Survival Tips for Eating Out

Survival Tips for Eating Out During the busy summer season, eating out can be unavoidable at times. Whether going through the fast food drive-thru or sitting down at your favorite family restaurant, it is possible to make healthful choices for your family. Here is our go-to-guide for quick and easy tips when dining with kids. Beverages: When ordering for kids, ask for water, lowfat milk or 100% juice in place of sugary beverages and specialty drinks. You can even request half water and half juice to help keep juice portions in check. If looking to provide a “treat” for your meal out, offer something that still provides important nutrients for growing bodies, such as lowfat chocolate milk. Starters: Sometimes the “freebies” can be great, but it's an easy way for tiny tummies to fill up before the main course arrives. From bread and popcorn to tortilla chips and breadsticks, each restaurant has their own signature starter item. Simply ask for half the normal portion of what they'd bring or hold the starters all together. Entrees: For the main event, don't be afraid to “special order” off the kids menu. If ordering a grilled cheese sandwich, ask for it to be made with whole wheat bread. For pasta and sauce, check to see if they offer whole grain pasta. In place of French fries, oftentimes you can ask for applesauce, carrot sticks, grapes, a baked potato or rice in its place. Check to see what's available as an alternative and most of the time, your server will be happy to help you find a substitution. Desserts: If your child's meal automatically comes with a dessert, ask for it to go so they're not getting bombarded with too many calories in one sitting. If your family does decide to order something, use it as an opportunity to teach about mindfulness and portion control. Showing that it's possible to enjoy a few bites rather than devouring an oversized sweet treat is a great lesson to teach at an early age.
  • Baby Y - Tips for Teething

Tips for Teething If your little one has started teething, you may be wondering how to soothe her – particularly after recent action from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urged manufacturers to stop producing over-the-counter teething products containing the ingredient benzocaine due to serious risk to infants and children. In place of these numbing gels and creams, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends these safe and effective methods for soothing baby while teething: Offer plastic, rubber or food-safe silicone teething toys for baby to chew on. Objects that are cool to the touch can provide relief. Try chilled (not frozen) teething rings; a cold, wet washcloth; or if baby has been introduced to solids, serve up chilled foods like applesauce, yogurt, berries or bananas. Using a clean finger, gently massage baby's gums or simply apply light pressure to help soothe discomfort. Baby might also like chewing on your finger for additional pain relief. If baby continues to be distressed, talk to her pediatrician about using acetaminophen (Tylenol) to reduce pain. While gaining popularity, the Academy advises against the use of Amber Teething Necklaces because they are both strangulation and choking hazards. Additionally, there is little evidence to support reported claims of reducing pain and inflammation during teething. Instead, shop for teething necklaces that Mom can wear for baby to chew on to relieve discomfort or opt for the tried-and-true methods above.

  • Baby Y - Is it Safe to Drink Alcohol as a Nursing Mother?

Is it Safe to Drink Alcohol as a Nursing Mother? While mothers are advised to avoid all alcohol during pregnancy because of severe risks to baby, they have more flexibility to safely drink in moderation while breastfeeding. If choosing to drink alcohol while nursing, here are some important tips to remember. First, understand that alcohol DOES pass into breast milk. Therefore, timing between intake and feedings is crucial. Since it generally takes 2-3 hours for the body to metabolize one drink (12 ounces beer, 5 ounces wine or 1.5 ounces distilled spirits), having an alcoholic drink immediately following a feeding can be the perfect strategy. This gives the alcohol time to metabolize during a typical feeding cycle, so when baby is ready to nurse again the drink would be out of mom's system. Next, keep in mind that a person's size impacts how quickly the alcohol will be metabolized. For smaller women, this process tends to take longer. Additionally, the more alcohol consumed the longer it takes to metabolize. Also keep in mind strategies such as drinking extra water, having a cup of coffee or resting will not help metabolize alcohol any faster. While it's not necessary to “pump and dump” breast milk after drinking alcohol, it can be beneficial if a normal feeding would occur while waiting for the alcohol to completely metabolize. This helps prevent engorgement while keeping milk supply consistent. As a nursing mother, being able to safely enjoy a glass of wine on date night or a beer with friends is just another way of making breastfeeding more approachable. While this is true, each mother should weigh the risks versus benefits on an individualized basis to see if incorporating any alcohol while breastfeeding is right for her lifestyle.
  • Baby Y Preventing SIDS

Preventing SIDS As a parent, one of the scariest things to think about is SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. SIDS is a sudden and silent medical disorder that can happen to an infant who appears to be healthy. It is currently the leading cause of death of infants 1 to 12 months old, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While the exact cause for SIDS is unknown, mounting evidence suggests babies who die from SIDS are born with brain abnormalities or defects, which affect nerve cells that likely control breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and waking from sleep. At this time, there is no way to identify babies born with these abnormalities. In addition to being born with this vulnerability, research suggests an infant needs exposure to two other factors at the same time in order to be at risk for SIDS. Those factors include being within a critical development period, which occurs when there is rapid growth and development in baby, as well as an outside stressor – such as overheating or being exposed to secondhand smoke. Though not completely preventable, many actions can be taken to reduce baby's risk for SIDS: Always place baby on his back to sleep. Use a firm sleep surface, such as a mattress in a safety-approved crib, covered by a fitted sheet. Do not let baby fall asleep on an adult's bed, couch or chair, whether alone or with you. Keep soft objects such as pillows, toys, crib bumpers, comforters and loose bedding out of baby's crib. Don't smoke during pregnancy and don't allow secondhand smoke around baby. Breastfeed for at least 6 months. Consider offering baby a pacifier for sleeping to reduce risk. Avoid letting baby get too hot during sleep. Have baby go for regular checkups and recommended vaccinations. Note: SIDS is not caused by vaccinations, immunizations or shots. Don't purchase products, such as wedges or sleep positioners, which claim to prevent or reduce risk for SIDS or similar complications. According to the CDC, research does not support the safety or effectiveness of these protects. The CDC goes on to say that many of these products have been associated with injury or death, especially when used in baby's sleep area.
