Over 6,000 Pairs of Socks Donated for Sock-tember
SPRINGFIELD, MA (October 31, 2018)
Big Y Foods is pleased to share that a grand total of 6,759 pairs of new, in-package socks will be donated to the homeless in the local community thanks to their first ever “Sock- tember” program, which ran from September 13th through October 3rd.
The sock collection drive was part of the company's annual flu shot initiative in all 39 Big Y World Class Market pharmacy locations. Employees and customers were encouraged to donate new, in-package socks for the homeless in the local community. For the first time, Big Y donated a pair of socks to a local shelter for every flu shot given in one of their pharmacies during the “Sock-tember” program. All Big Y locations with pharmacies were encouraged to have a “Crazy Sock Day” for employees to raise awareness. Socks were also available for purchase in these stores so customers who aren't getting flu shots could add to the donations.
As in years' past, flu shots are available at all pharmacy locations with no appointment needed. Big Y was the first supermarket in the region to offer flu shot clinics in their stores over 20 years ago. Since then, over 100,000 customers have received a flu shot at Big Y. Big Y pharmacists have been administering flu shots since 2010 and have given over 41,000 shots since then.
