Founded in 1936 by brothers Paul and Gerald D'Amour, the store was named after an intersection in Chicopee, Massachusetts where two roads converge to form a "Y".

Spencer Big Y Is Reborn
SPENCER, MA (May 7, 2018)
Big Y Foods, Inc. is pleased to announce the completion of the renovations at their Spencer, MA World Class Market at 62 West Main Street. This multi-million dollar renovation effort began in February and included major renovations in many areas of the 50,753 square foot store and various new additions in response to changing customer needs.
An official cake cutting ceremony to celebrate the Grand Re-opening is planned for Friday, May 11th at 10:30 a.m.
New décor and fixtures in many departments, including bakery, produce, seafood, meat, and food service will showcase even more products than ever before. Additional improvements include new flooring, an LED lighting upgrade, pharmacy alterations, and a brand new café in which customers and employees may relax and enjoy Big Y's premium lineup of freshly prepared foods.
Store director, Patrick Tatro, will continue to manage this store. The Spencer Big Y currently employs 140 workers and there are plans to hire an additional 10. All interested applicants should apply at www.bigy.com.
Big Y in Spencer originally opened in November of 1995. The store's most recent previous remodel was April of 2003. The store is open every day from 7 am until 9 pm. The Pharmacy and Wellness Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 am until 7 pm, Saturday from 9 am until 5 pm, and Sunday from 11 am until 3 pm.
To celebrate their May 11th Grand Reopening they will serve complimentary samples of Big Y's celebration cake, coffee, donuts and other refreshments along with store-wide product samples. The local VFW will conduct a flag-raising ceremony. Four local schools will receive a donation of 500,000 Education Express points that can be used to obtain free equipment for their schools.. The four schools are David Prouty High School, Knox Trail Middle School, East Brookfield Elementary School, and Wire Village Elementary School.
Education Express is Big Y's program to help local schools get free, much needed supplies and equipment. Introduced in 1993, Education Express is an innovative program that takes the burden off the individual schools and teachers and allows the community to provide support. Since 1993, with customers' help, over 2,000 local schools have received approximately 14 million dollars of supplies and equipment through the Education Express program.
