Proud to be family owned and operated, we operate almost 80 stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts with over 11,000 employees. Big Y has been named a 2015 Employer of Choice by the Employers Association of the Northeast. Founded in 1936 by brothers Paul and Gerald D'Amour, the store was named after an intersection in Chicopee, Massachusetts where two roads converge to form a "Y".

Groton Big Y Is Reborn
SPRINGFIELD, MA (May 16, 2019)
Big Y Foods, Inc. is pleased to announce the completion of the renovations at their Groton, CT Big Y World Class Market at 995 Poquonnock Road. This renovation effort began in January and included major renovations in many areas of the 65,748 square foot store with various new additions in response to changing customer needs.
New décor and fixtures in all departments, including meat, produce; bakery, and an expanded cheese and olive bar showcase even more products than ever before. Customers can notice new exterior signage, as the entire facility has been upgraded.
An upgraded pizza shop, made to order sub and Panini station, fish & chips made with fresh haddock plus other fried seafood, and freshly prepared hot food bar have been installed to further enhance the store’s lineup of prepared meals along with an on-site sushi chef. The meat department has installed a new butcher shop with expanded variety of natural products like grass fed beef, 100% American grown lamb and veal and organic Smart chicken. The produce department was enhanced in every category. Also available are many freshly made “Quick & Easy Meals” selections that can be easily prepared at home in the microwave or the oven. The upgraded sales floor features the all-new Living Well Eating Smart section, which offers hundreds of organic, natural, and gluten free products in grocery, health and beauty, dairy and frozen foods, along with freshly ground nut butters and an ample selection of bulk dry foods.
Big Y continues its focus on supporting local partners like Mystic Syrup from Turkey Woods Farms in Mystic, CT and local beer from Outer Light Brewing from Groton, CT.
Store director, Ray Lathrop, continues to manage this store. Lathrop has been with Big Y since 1986, when he started as a dairy manager in their Norwich store. He was promoted to store director and assigned to the Norwich location in July of 2010 before transferring to Old Lyme later that year and then in Killingly, Mystic and Old Saybrook before being assigned to Groton in October 2017.
Big Y in Groton originally opened on October, 2004. The actual sales floor is 45,115 square feet and has 13 total grocery aisles. The store is open from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Monday-Sunday and the pharmacy is opened Monday–Friday 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Big Y’s community programs include an annual merit scholarship program that has awarded over $3 million since 1984, store tours for schoolchildren, and support of many local educational programs.
