Big Y in the News

Headquartered in Springfield, MA, Big Y is one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England. Proud to be family owned and operated, we operate almost 80 stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts with over 11,000 employees. Big Y has been named a 2015 Employer of Choice by the Employers Association of the Northeast. Founded in 1936 by brothers Paul and Gerald D'Amour, the store was named after an intersection in Chicopee, Massachusetts where two roads converge to form a "Y".

Big Y in the News contains excerpts from press releases that have been sent to local media.

Big Y Turns Pink

SPRINGFIELD, MA (October 1, 2018) - In order to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer, all Big Y Supermarkets will be donating proceeds from various departments throughout the store to 32 local breast cancer support groups throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut. Since 2007, the chain has raised close to $2 million dollars for this cause. The program, “Partners of Hope” reflectsthe partnership, commitment and support of breast cancer awareness and research that is so vital for many. Last year, Big Y raised close to $210,000.00.

During the entire month of October, Big Y will donate a portion of the proceeds from both the Floral and Produce Departments. Additionally, Big Y will donate 5 cents for each Big Y, Top Care, Full Circle, Simply Done, Paws Happy Life, Pure Harmony, @Ease, Tippy Toes and Culinary Tours brand products* purchased between October 4 and 10 (*excluding random weight items). The Big Y Butcher Shops will donate ten cents from every pound of All Natural Angus Beef® and Big Y Smart Chicken® sold during the entire month of October. Big Y Pharmacy & Wellness Center will also donate $5 for every flu shot given. Big Y's pink reusable, earth-friendly shopping bag highlighting the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign will also be available and every store will be promoting Partners of Hope pink ribbons for $1 from October 1st through October 31st as a way of generating additional proceeds for local breast cancer organizations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut. In another first for the program this year, the $1 ribbons will now be available at all 8 Big Y Express fuel station and convenience stores.

Big Y's dietitian team, Carrie Taylor and Andrea Luttrell, will devote a portion of their fall newsletter to cancer prevention. Look for the “Living Well Eating Smart” displays throughout the stores.

According to Big Y CEO, Donald D'Amour, “Breast cancer affects thousands of women and manymen each year. We hope that this initiative will not only promote breast cancer awareness but alsosave lives through early detection and care.”
