Chocolate Candy Cane Cake

Before you start....
Check first with your Mom or Dad to be sure it's OK for you to cook. A grown-up should be in the kitchen to help, especially when using the stove and handling hot things
- Read the recipe carefully. Make sure that you have all the ingredients (foods) and equipment (measuring spoons, cups, pitcher, etc.) you will need.
- Make room to work. Clear and wash the counter.
- Get out everything you will need to make the recipe.
- Wash your hands. Make the recipe and then read it carefully again to be sure you haven't forgotten any ingredient.
- When you are through, remember that a good cook cleans up! Wash things in warm, soapy water.

INGREDIENTS:
1 package (2-layer size) chocolate cake mix
1 package (4 serving size) Jell-O Chocolate Flavor Instant Pudding and Pie Filling
4 eggs
1 8oz. tub of sour cream
½ cup vegetable oil
½ cup water
4 squares Baker’s Semi-Sweet Baking Chocolate, chopped
18 small candy canes (crushed coarsely it should make 1 cup)
1 tub (8 oz.) Cool Whip Whipped Topping, thawed

DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease 2 (9 inch) round cake pans lightly.
Beat cake mix, dry pudding mix, eggs, sour cream, oil, and water in a large bowl with an electric mixer on low speed until just moistened. Scrape sides of bowl often while mixing.
Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes or until blended.
Stir in chopped chocolate and 2 Tbsp of the crushed candy canes.
Pour batter evenly into the prepared baking pans.
Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near center comes out clean.
Let cake cool in pans for 10 minutes on wire rack.
Loosen sides of cake from the pan with knife.
Invert cakes onto rack and gently remove the pan.
Let cakes cool completely on wire rack.
Put 1 layer of cake onto the serving plate.
Spread 1 cup of whipped topping evenly over top of the cake.
Top with the second cake layer.
Frost the entire cake with the remaining whipped topping.
Garnish the sides and top of the cake with the remaining crushed candy cane pieces.
