  Candy Apples

Before you start....
Check first with your Mom or Dad to be sure it's OK for you to cook. A grown-up should be in the kitchen to help, especially when using the stove and handling hot things
  • Read the recipe carefully. Make sure that you have all the ingredients (foods) and equipment (measuring spoons, cups, pitcher, etc.) you will need.
  • Make room to work. Clear and wash the counter.
  • Get out everything you will need to make the recipe.
  • Wash your hands. Make the recipe and then read it carefully again to be sure you haven't forgotten any ingredient.
  • When you are through, remember that a good cook cleans up! Wash things in warm, soapy water.
INGREDIENTS:

2 cups sugar
2/3 cups light corn syrup
1 cup water
1 two-inch cinnamon stick
red food coloring
6 small red apples, on wooden sticks (firm apples work best)

DIRECTIONS:

-Combine the sugar, light corn syrup, water, and cinnamon in a small saucepan.
-Over medium heat, stir constantly until the mixture comes to a boil.
-Without stirring, cook mixture to 300 degrees.
-Cover a fork with a damp cloth and wipe away the sugar crystals from the inside of the saucepan.
-Remove the pan from the heat and then remove the cinnamon stick.
-Add red food coloring until mixture turns desired color, stirring as little as possible.
-Hold each apple by the wooden stick, quickly dip in the hot syrup and coat the apple completely.
-Remove the apple and twirl to distribute the syrup evenly.
-Place the apples upright on a rack until dry, making sure that the apples do not touch.
-If desired, sprinkle apples with nuts, granola, sprinles, etc. immediately after coating apple with hot syrup. Remaining syrup can be used as "glue" to glue on faces or other designs.
