Benny Benson
Flag Designer
In 1926, 13-year-old Benny won a contest to design the Alaska state flag. His flag shows eight gold stars on a blue background, which stands for the Alaska sky. The starts represent the Big Dipper, a symbol of strength, and the North Star, which stood for the bright future of the new state of Alaska.

Jeff Rose
Junior Fisherman
Jeff, age 10, lives in Sitka with his parents and sister, Suzie. During summers off from school, Jeff helps out on his family's fishing boat. The boat was built by his grandfather, Abe, a commercial fisherman who used it to fish for salmon. In 1980, his father, Dave, took over the boat and the family fishing business. Jeff hopes to follow in their footsteps, becoming the third generation family member to fish in Alaska.
