Big Y®Scholarship Program FAQ

Q. Can I Apply Now?
A. Applications are Accepted from October through January each year.

Q. What are College Board scores? Are they placement tests?

A. No. College board scores refer to SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT and LSAT scores.

Q. I did not take any SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT or LSAT exams. Can I still apply for a scholarship?
A. Yes. If they were taken, please submit a copy of your scores. If you did not take them, you can apply without them and it will not adversely affect your application.

Q. If my SAT scores are listed on my high school transcript, do I need to submit them separately?
A. We prefer to receive a separate copy or print-out of SAT/ACT scores because they are sometimes hard to locate on a high school transcript. If the only scores you can submit are on the transcript, please make sure to highlight them so they can be found easily.

Q. I am already in college, do I still need to submit my SAT or ACT scores?
A. Yes. We would like to see SAT/ACT scores from applicants who are High School Seniors and College Freshmen. Once you have entered your sophomore college year, you need not submit SAT/ACT scores.

Q. I am a non-traditional student returning to college after some time off. My SAT/ACT scores are several years old. Do I need to submit them with my application?
A. No. If your SAT/ACT scores are more than 5 years old, you need not submit them with your application.

Q. Do Graduate students need to submit SAT/ACT scores?
A. No. Only GRE, GMAT or LSAT scores if they were taken in the last 5 years.

Q. Are Big Y Scholarships for High School Seniors only?
A. No. Scholarships are awarded to High School Seniors, Community College Students, Undergraduate Students, Graduate Students, and Non-Traditional students who are returning to college after taking some time off.

Q. Do you have to be a full-time student to apply?
A. No. Part-time students taking classes at an accredited college or university are eligible to apply.

Q. Does one of the letters of recommendation have to be from a teacher?
A. Yes. Because Big Y Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit, it is important that one of your letters of recommendation come from someone who can speak to your abilities in the academic arena, such as a teacher, professor, guidance counselor or academic advisor.

Q. Is it okay if I cannot send everything in one envelope?
A. Yes. The fewer envelopes you send in the less chance there is of something getting lost in the mail. Please make sure that your name is clearly visible on all pieces of your application.

Q. My professor wants to send my letter of recommendation directly to Big Y. Is that okay?
A. Yes. Please make sure your name is clearly visible on the letter so that we can add it to your file it once it arrives.

Q. Do I have to be accepted to college before I can apply for a Big Y Scholarship?
A. No. You can apply for a scholarship before being accepted to college. If you are selected as a scholarship recipient, you will be required to submit a copy of the invoice from the college or university you choose to attend.

Q. My grades will not be available until after the February 1st deadline, can I apply now and submit my grades later?
A. No. Please apply before February 1st with the most recent grades you have available. Current mid-semester grades or last year’s grades are acceptable. Documents received by the Scholarship Committee postmarked after February 1st will not be added to your file.

Q. I am a High School Senior. What grades do I need to submit?
