Teachers to tell us about one of their memorable Homework Helpline calls...
My most memorable call came from a junior high student and his mom who were working on a very difficult math logic puzzle. I took down all of the information, enlisted the help of other teachers working the Helpline, and we all took it home with us to figure out. The next morning, I received a call from one of the other teachers who had solved the puzzle. I was so excited to be able to call the student back later that day to guide him through solving the puzzle. It was a perfect example of the collaborative efforts behind the Homework Helpline!"
The calls which I find most interesting are those in which I can educate students about the Hispanic culture. I enjoy opportunities to increase multi-cultural awareness of Spanish-speaking countries. As a Spanish teacher, I also enjoy clarifying questions to improve the language skills of our callers. It’s great when kids say ‘Oh, now I get it!
Being a Homework Helpline teacher has taught me a great deal about how students learn, and about how differently they interpret directions given by a teacher. I’ve learned that many students just need to know that they can find success in school if they just put in the effort.
