(Also known as Mexican Green Tomato)
Except for the thin, parchment type covering that surrounds the Tomatillo (pronounced tohm-ah-TEE-oh), this small, hard fruit (belonging to the tomato family) looks like a large green cherry tomato beautifully hidden in a dry close-fitting Chinese lantern-looking husk. Tomatillos are rich in vitamin A and C and provide thiamine and niacin
Used most often when firm and green, the somewhat "sweet-sour" flavor of the Tomatillo can be enjoyed both raw or cooked. A necessary ingredient for a favorite Southwestern dish called salsa verde or green salsa, the flavor of the Tomatillo is enhanced when roasted and is a basic ingredient in Mexican and Southwestern cuisine, and are used to make salads and sauces.
Generally used as a vegetable, the fruit will ripen turning yellow or purplish. Simply peel off the husk and wash before using, or leave the husk on and garnish an appetizer tray to form a visually appealing dish.
Seasonality: Available year-round.
Selection & Storage: Melissa’s Tomatillos are hand-selected for excellent quality. Choose firm fruit with dry husks. Avoid bruised or shriveled fruit. Refrigerate in a paper bag up to one month.
Preparation: Simply peel off husks and wash before using. Cooking is not required but will soften the firm skin of the Tomatillo.
