Crisp apples, corn that pops with every bite, firm peppers, and the juiciest watermelon — it’s as if you just picked it from your own garden.

Storing Fruits and Vegetables for Freshness

Those fresh, crispy vegetables and perfectly ripened fruits require special handling to retain their superb flavor. They should be stored unwashed to prevent mold from forming. Here are a few other storage suggestions:

•Apples can be kept at room temperature for 1 or 2 days then stored in plastic bags in the fridge crisper for up to 1 month.

•For berries, first remove any spoiled or crushed pieces then store in the crisper in plastic bags or container for 2 to 3 days.

•Broccoli can be kept in the crisper in plastic bags for 3 to 5 days.

•For best flavor, use corn immediately; but in its own husk, it can be stored in plastic bags in the crisper for 1 to 2 days.

•Tomatoes should be ripened at room temperature away from sunlight then stored at room temperature and eaten as soon as ripe.
