Now that you’re older, you may have noticed that people are giving
you more responsibility. Maybe you’re allowed
to stay at home alone for longer periods of time, or are even babysitting
a younger sibling or neighbor. That’s because these adults trust
that you’ll know the right thing to do in certain situations, especially
emergencies. Which is why being prepared and staying calm is so
important. Here are a few key tips about what it means to be prepared
and also what to do in the most common situations.
Injury
Having a first aid kit accessible is a must. Talk with your parents
about what’s inside and ask them how to treat different injuries
like cuts, bruises and burns.
If you are babysitting and they don’t have a kit handy, ask where
you can find the essentials like cold compresses, peroxide and
bandages. Also, be sure that emergency contact information is posted
near the phone. This should include parent cell numbers, poison control
and local medical emergency numbers, such as 9-1-1. Don’t guess
when it comes to treating injuries, always call an adult.
House Fire
In the event of a fire, all families should have an escape plan
in place. This includes how to get out safely by at least two
different routes. Family members should practice how to operate
windows and establish a special meeting place located a safe
distance from the house. It could be a mailbox, the neighbor’s
driveway or a large tree in the yard. This prevents family members
from wandering around looking for one another, or worse, being
tempted to re-enter the burning house for one thought to be trapped
inside. Once everyone has made it outside at the special meeting
place, a designated member of the family can be sent to the neighbor’s
to call 9-1-1.
Severe Weather
If you suspect bad weather is coming, turn on the local news for
weather reports. Be able to identify your county and the general
area on a map where you live. If there is severe weather coming,
the reporters will usually tell you what to do. Also, be familiar
with the sound of your community’s emergency weather siren. But
trust your instincts, too. If you feel like it would be best to move
to an area of the house that is safer, like a basement or interior
room without windows, do it.
So as you can see, all it takes is a little planning, practice and common sense to get you through a tough situation. No one wants to experience emergencies but in the event that you do, you’ll prove to everyone that you are mature enough to handle it!
