Have you ever had a lot of soda at a party and suddenly felt really wired
and jittery? Maybe it was funny at first but then you started to
feel sick and really run down? Most likely you were feeling the
effects of caffeine, which is a stimulant that increases heart
rate, blood pressure and feelings of alertness. Caffeine is an
ingredient found in coffee drinks, soda, tea, energy drinks, chocolate
and even some medicine. But just because it’s natural doesn’t
mean it’s healthy. In fact, most health care professionals will suggest
kids your age don’t even consume caffeine. So the
next time you reach for an energy drink, iced latte or a soda,
give it a second thought.
What to Do When You Need a Boost
It’s true that caffeine might make you feel more alert, but it’s
only a temporary fix. Too much caffeine can make you feel pretty
yucky. It can give you a stomachache, headache and even a racing
heartbeat. So what should you do if you’re feeling sluggish and sleepy,
but resting isn’t
an option? Drink a large glass of water. Dehydration can cause
you to feel tired. Eat a snack that contains carbohydrates and
protein, like an apple and almonds or low-fat yogurt, so your energy
will last.
How to Cut Out Caffeine
Have you ever seen an adult who drinks coffee every morning not
get their morning cup of java? Steer clear! People who are used
to caffeine and don’t get it can get headaches or feel sleepy and
grumpy. If you use caffeine every day, you may start to depend
on it. If you feel you’re already dependent on caffeine to get you
through your day, it’s even more of a reason to cut down. Talk with
your parents or a registered dietitian and they can help you with
cutting it out gradually. The effects of caffeine on kids can be
pretty intense. Most experts agree a little caffeine used occasionally
won’t hurt you, but when you make choices to limit it, you’ll
be much healthier in the long run!
