Teen Talk With Tara - Procrastination
Just imagine...You
have a test tomorrow, a 10-page research paper due the day after
that, and two of your favorite television shows are on tonight.
You promised yourself, after the problems you had last year,
that you would start assignments on time to avoid these last minute
difficulties, but you are behind again! Why do you continue to
procrastinate, and what can you do to avoid this last minute scramble? Well,
here are some ideas to help you, if you tend to wait until the last minute
to complete your assignments.
First, you are not alone.
Actually, it is common for students to procrastinate when a task
seems overwhelming, or when they are not sure how to begin. Here
are some tips to make sure your school year begins successfully.
- Break
each task into smaller ones. It may seem overwhelming to complete
a 10-page research paper, but it is completely manageable to finish the
outline and introduction now, and write the rest of it later.
- Budget
your time better. It is too disconcerting to study for hours
and hours at a time. But, if you study for an hour after school, you can
take a break and watch TV or play a video game, and then study for an
hour again, later. Don’t
forget to budget time to play, as well as time to work.
- Do the most
difficult assignments first. If you complete the toughest assignment
when you are fresh, it will be easier to complete the other
tasks later, even when you are tired. This will keep you focused on the
task in front of you and your mind will no longer wander.
- Complete your homework
in a distraction free zone. Make sure there is no television,
cell phone or bed too close to your study zone. You need a place to study
that helps you concentrate. Spending quality time studying will help you
later when you want plenty of time to explore other activities or just
relax! By following these tips, you will be surprised at how easy it is
to find time to study for a test, or complete a lengthy assignment. The
key to success is to make time for everything — work,
as well as fun!
