Don't Ignore the Morning Munchies

By Carrie Taylor, RD, LDN – Big Y’s Registered Dietitian

You’ve probably heard teachers or parents say, “Make sure you eat breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day!” But what’s the big deal? Turns out they’re right. Ignoring the morning munchies won’t only leave you feeling sluggish, but studies show breakfast will help you do better in school. So, make sure you take the time to eat something before you head out of the door. It’s exactly the fuel you need to start
your morning and stay on track throughout the day.

Does it matter what you eat for breakfast? Sure it does, but any breakfast is better than no breakfast at all. Remember to eat a variety of foods, like grains (breads and cereals), protein (meats, eggs and nuts), fruits and vegetables and dairy (milk,
cheese and yogurt).

Here are some “out of the box” ideas for fun and healthy breakfasts to make with your parents:

NUTTY MOONS: Spread peanut butter on two halves of a whole grain toasted
English muffin

CRUNCHY YO-ON-THE-GO: Mix granola in with your favorite fruit flavored yogurt

WAFFLE DIPPERS: Dip strips of a whole wheat waffle in yogurt

FIESTA BURRITO: Add scrambled egg and shredded cheese to a tortilla and warm in the microwave; top with salsa

FRUIT SMOOTHIES: Blend together yogurt and your favorite fruit with milk or juice

The next time you think you are too sleepy or in too much of a hurry to break for breakfast, stop and think. Even if you grab something quickly on your way out of the
door, your body will thank you for it!
