We hear a lot about the environment these days, especially global warming. You’ve probably learned about it in school, but it seems it’s also everywhere on the Internet and T.V. There’s a reason there’s such a buzz. Many people, including some pretty smart scientists, are worried that if we don’t start taking better care of our planet we will be facing some tough consequences in the future.
You might think that since the issues with the environment seem so big, you can’t do anything about them. The truth is that we can all play a part in making our world a better and healthier place to live. It’s especially important for kids to get involved because the future of our world depends on you. When each of us make even simple changes, it can make a big difference. And when people like your friends and parents see you lending a helping hand, it will inspire them to take action, too!
OK, so you’re ready to start doing your part. Where do you begin? You may have already heard of the three Rs of conservation: reduce, reuse and recycle. Here’s a recap of what they mean as well as some pretty cool ideas on how you can take it a step further.
by using only what you need.
Make it a habit to turn off lights, the TV and your computer when you aren’t using them. You can use less water by taking shorter showers, turning off the water while brushing your teeth and asking your parents to install low-flow showerheads and toilets.
You can reduce the number of trees that are cut down to make paper by using cloth bags at the grocery store and using a lunch box or insulated bag instead of paper bags.
When possible, ride your bike or walk instead of riding in a car. And when you have to use a car, carpool with your friends.
and get creative!
When we find a second use for things we might normally put in the trash, we create less waste. Reuse packing cartons and shipping materials. Use old newspapers to wrap gifts or for packing materials.
whenever possible.
If you aren’t already recycling at home, ask your parents if they will help you
get started. Your community might already have a curbside pickup program
and if they don’t, find out if your town has a recycling center. Paper, plastics,
aluminum cans and glass can all be recycled to make new things.
