Healthy Beat - for your body and mind

The Importance of Getting Active

Believe it or not, there was a time — not too long ago — when kids didn’t have computers, portable video games, cell phones or iPods. It was a lot different then than now. Today, the average kid spends 51/2 hours with electronics every day, not counting the hours when they’re in school or doing homework. That means that most kids seem to be spending most of their free time vegging out, IMing or gaming. If you’re like most American kids today, you’re just not getting enough exercise! Getting enough exercise now will set you up for a healthier lifetime as you get older, as well as make you feel better now. The long-term effects of physical inactivity are bad for your health — you’re far more likely to develop heart disease, obesity and/or diabetes later in life.

What are the Benefits of Getting Fit?
• It will be easier to maintain a healthy weight.
• You’ll be less likely to develop type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.
• You’ll build strong muscles and bones and increase your overall strength.
• It’s good for your heart and will help you build endurance.
• It’s good for your self-esteem! You’ll start feeling better about yourself.

Finding Your Fit
Getting fit means having fun! Just start by thinking about the things you like to do. If you’re not used to working up a sweat, it’s best to start slowly and gradually work your way up to an hour a day. You’d be surprised at how many of your favorite activities will help you hit that hour of physical activity. Think about inline skating, skateboarding, dancing, jumping rope, frisbee, hackey sack, even bowling!

And remember that everyday things like walking the dog or doing your chores count, too. So does gym class. Mix it up a bit and do different things every day so you don’t get bored. Once you get started, you’ll realize how great it feels to get out there and get moving, and you’ll enjoy the rewards for years to come.
