It seems like every time you go to the store, there’s a new kind of energy bar or drink promising increased alertness, enhanced performance and good nutrition. But behind the cool packaging, flashy bottles and steep prices, can these products really deliver what they promise? The truth is that most of these products include high doses of sugar and caffeine. That’s why they seem to give you the boost you need to get through sports practice or homework until your next meal. With so much going on in your life, it’s OK to use these products in moderation. A nutrition bar as breakfast on the go is better than no breakfast at all and many do offer better nutrition than a candy bar or bag of chips. But no matter what the labels read, no energy drink or bar can truly make you a better athlete or student.
The next time you reach for one of these products, take a closer look at its ingredients. Some contain hundreds of calories, which might be OK for athletes who burn through them, but perhaps not for someone wanting to keep from gaining weight. Caffeine is also a common ingredient. Although it is legal, caffeine is a stimulant drug, and can cause jitters, headaches and sleep problems. Some brands even include “mysterious” ingredients like herbal supplements that haven’t been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
There is a lot of savvy marketing behind energy bars and drinks and it takes a smart consumer to see through the hype. If these products are becoming a normal part of your diet, remember...“all things in moderation.” The truth is that the best energy boost comes the natural way — by getting enough sleep and exercise, eating a well-balanced diet and drinking plenty of water.
