Now That You're in Middle School

Although it might not be your favorite after school activity, it does serve a purpose. Homework not only helps you learn, but getting a good education can have a large impact on your future life. Think of the ìadded workloadî as sort of your teachersí way of preparing you for whatís to come. It might be hard to imagine, but when you head off to high school and even college, the workload gets even tougher. Developing good study habits now can make managing your homework easier and less stressful in the future. But what if youíre having trouble because you donít have enough time or itís really hard to understand? Donít worry...there are lots of resources to help you!

A great first place to start when youíre having a hard time with your homework is with your parents. Because they know you so well, they might be able to explain something so that you understand it. They can also help you with time management so that you can fit in homework and all your other responsibilities like chores, sports and other extracurricular activities.

Teachers are also great resources because they can give you advice specific to the assignment youíre having trouble with. They also can help you set up a system so you donít forget whatís due and when. Remember, helping kids learn is their job and they will appreciate your effort to do your best!

Another resource you may want to try is Big Yís Homework Helpline. Itís staffed by teachers who are experts in a variety of subjects. The call is free and the hours are 4-7 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Just call 1-800-866-BIGY (or 504-5555 in Springfield, MA).

Other Homework Tips

  1. Find a quiet place without clutter or distractions to do your homework. This will allow you to concentrate better, which usually means youíll finish it more quickly!
  2. Allow for enough time to complete a project so you donít have to ìcrunchî at the last minute.
  3. Never be afraid to ask for help or continue asking for help if youíre still having trouble. It can be frustrating, but remember that everyone learns at a different pace. Your parents and teachers are there to help. Together, you will be able to conquer your homework.
