I Look Different... Am I Normal?

It’s very common for kids your age to compare themselves with friends and classmates. Because of your age, your body is changing all the time! Think about just last year for example. You’re definitely smarter now, and maybe a few inches taller or a couple pounds heavier. Sometimes physical changes can be confusing and you may wonder if you’re normal.

First of all...what’s normal? Take a look around your classroom. It’s likely that you’ll see taller kids, shorter kids, students with curly hair and some with straight hair. Although we all look different, it’s not by accident. These traits are passed on by your parents and are called “genes.” It’s kind of a special code that makes you unique from everyone else. So being “normal” can’t possibly mean that we all look the same, right?

Now that we understand that being different is normal, what if you are still worried about your appearance? Try talking to a parent or a teacher. They will help you understand more about your changing body, and can offer some great advice about how to best take care of it.

Remember these 5 things:

1. Looking different is normal.

2. Genes (the traits passed on by your parents) largely determine how you will look.

3. Everyone grows and develops at different speeds.

4. Eating a healthy diet, exercising and getting plenty of sleep will maximize your body’s health.

5. Focus on the things you like about yourself.
