How to Say I'm Sorry

Let’s face it: It’s not always easy to get along with your friends and family. There are times when we feel mad and we say things that hurt other people’s feelings. When you say things that are hurtful, it might make you feel bad. That’s when you know it’s the right time to say those three magic words —

“I am sorry.”

Kids aren’t perfect and people (even grown-ups) make mistakes from time to time. There will be times when you’ll want to admit you were wrong to your friends, brothers or sisters, parents, and even your teachers.

When you apologize, you’re telling someone that you’re sorry for the hurt you caused that person, even

if you didn’t do it on purpose. When you are sincere about your apology, meaning you really and truly regret what you did, saying sorry can make you feel better. You can feel good after apologizing because you are trying to make things right again. There are lots of ways to apologize. Here are some examples:

“I’m sorry I took your video game.”

“I’m sorry I yelled at you.”

“I was mad, but I shouldn’t have called you that name. I’m sorry.”

“I’m really sorry I hit you. That was wrong and I won’t do it again.”

“I’m sorry I talked in class, even after you asked me to stop.”

What else can you do besides saying your sorry?

You might want to tell the person that you won’t do it again. Or, you could do something nice for the person after you apologize, like make them a card. It might take the person some time to get over what you did or said to them that was hurtful, so be patient. You can at least feel good about apologizing and deciding to do better in the future.
