All Red in the Face

Handling Life’s Embarrassing Moments

Whether it’s the proverbial foot in the mouth or something more physical, like spilling your tray in the cafeteria, you’ve probably had a few embarrassing moments in your life. Everyone has! The first step to dealing with those personal blunders is to control your reactions to them.

They say laughter is the best medicine to life’s little mistakes. And it’s true. If you choose to laugh at yourself at your most embarrassing moments, it’s hard for others to embarrass you further.

Slips and Trips

At one time or another, everyone has said something they shouldn’t have. Sometimes it’s not a big deal and the best thing to do is to ignore your “oops” or change the subject — quickly! But if you’ve said something that may have hurt someone’s feelings, always apologize and try to explain what you really meant.

Equally mortifying are physical screw ups, like falling flat on your face or accidentally burping in class during a test. But if you learn to control your reaction by not drawing any more attention to the situation, your friends probably won’t give you too much grief. Also, don’t dwell on the humiliating experience and it will be easier to put behind you.

Celebrity Goof-Ups

Next time you do something that has you red-faced, be thankful it wasn’t broadcast on TV or splattered on a magazine cover. It has to be tough for celebrities when they embarrass themselves because their humiliating moments can be very public. Take former president George Bush, for instance. While attending a meeting of world leaders in Japan, he threw up at the dinner table, right on the Japanese Prime Minister — and right in front of all the TV cameras. That image was broadcast, numerous times, throughout the world. Later he joked about the incident, making some quip about dry cleaning bills.

So the next time something mortifying happens, just be thankful the whole world isn’t watching!

And remember: don’t be so hard on yourself. In time, you’ll probably chuckle about that mishap you never thought you’d get over.
