A Guide on Your Side

Finding the right mentor for you

Everyone knows that it’s not easy being a teenager these days. You’ve got lots to think about: homework, college, sports, extracurricular activities and relationships. And these are just the so-called “normal” things! You also are faced with tough issues like school violence and pressures to drink or take drugs.

If you feel the need to talk with someone about your feelings and you’re uncomfortable confiding in your parents, you may wish to find a mentor. A mentor is an adult or college student who volunteers his or her time with you on a regular basis. They are simply there to listen and help you sort through tough decisions all teens have to make. The great thing is that mentors aren’t there to judge you, so it can be easier to open up and share your feelings. Studies show that kids who have mentors have more positive attitudes and self-confidence.

So how can you find a mentor? Contact Big Brothers, Big Sisters or another mentoring program in your community. If you don’t know where else to look, ask a parent, teacher or school counselor. You may also consider becoming a mentor yourself! There are lots of kids who need older kids to look up to. Not only can mentoring make you feel really good inside knowing that you’re helping someone, your volunteer efforts also look great on college applications and resumes.
