5 WAYS to FIT

You've probably heard it before...more and more kids your age aren't getting enough exercise. Perhaps you have less recess time now that you're in middle school. Or maybe you're spending more time at home online chatting with friends and less time playing outside. Well, if you aren't getting enough physical activity, and you know who you are...now's the time to take charge of your health and get fit! Here are five tips to a more ìfit-tasticî you.

1. Get moving

It's easy to fit physical activity into your daily routine. Walk, bike or jog to see friends. Climb stairs instead of taking an escalator or elevator. Try to do these things for a total of 30 minutes every day.

2. Work up a sweat

Vigorous workouts, when you're breathing hard and sweating, help your heart pump better and give you more energy. Start with a warm-up that stretches your muscles. Include 20 minutes of aerobic activity, such as running, jogging or dancing. The time will fly by when you're groovin' to your favorite music! Don't forget to cool down with more stretching and deep breathing.

3. Get fit with friends and family

Being active is much more fun with friends or family. Encourage others to join you and plan one special activity, like a bike ride or hike, with a group each week.

4. Join in physical activities at school

In addition to a physical education class, there are lots of different team sports you can consider. Structured activities are a great way to feel good, meet friends, and stay physically fit.

5. Make physical activity fun!

Be adventurous and creative. Try new sports, games, and other activities. You'll grow stronger, and look and feel better too.
