Get Your Home Naturally Clean

Did you know that some of the safest (for you and the environment) and most effective household cleaners are located right in the food section of your Big Y? It’s true. Take a peek inside your kitchen cupboards and you’ll no doubt
find some double-duty food products. For instance, the same baking soda that makes your chocolate chip cookies so fluffy and tasty also makes toilets sparkle. Want to know what else baking soda and other common kitchen and bath products can do for your home? Read on.

Baking Soda

In the kitchen:
• Hate the noxious fumes from chemical-based oven cleaners? Try this odor free solution: Clean a dirty oven by sprinkling the inside with baking soda and squirting it with water. Let it sit overnight, then scrape up the spills. Give the oven a final cleaning with hot water.
• If lingering food odors are making your fridge and freezer a bit unpleasant, just place an open box of baking soda in each to absorb the odors.

In the bathroom:
• The combination of vinegar and baking soda will create its own “scrubbing bubbles” to clean and deodorize your toilets. Just sprinkle baking soda into the bowl, add vinegar and scrub with a brush.

In the laundry:
• Adding 1 cup baking soda to each load of laundry will defuse even the strongest smells.

Around the home:
Deodorize carpets by sprinkling baking soda on them, then vacuuming.
Even the nastiest pet mess can be cleaned up with baking soda. Just cover the entire area, then let it sit overnight and vacuum. Follow up by washing the area with a solution of 2 cups white distilled vinegar and 1 gallon water. Rinse with plain water and let dry.

Toothpaste

Around the home:
• Chrome will return to its brilliant sheen when cleaned with a non-gel toothpaste, which contains a mild abrasive.
• Non-gel toothpaste will also help you remove stubborn crayon marks from your walls; just scrub gently before rinsing with water.
• Scuff marks on your leather shoes are no match for a bit of toothpaste and a
soft cloth. Rub gently, then wipe clean with a damp cloth and your shoes
will look like new!
• Dazzle your friends with your diamonds: Make them extra-sparkly by cleaning them with toothpaste. Brush them gently, then rinse well.

Salt

In the kitchen:
• Got a nasty spill in your oven? Let the oven cool to warm, then sprinkle the spill with salt. After a few minutes, just scrape the mess away and rinse the area with warm water.
• Greasy iron pans can be tough to clean. Eliminate the mess by sprinkling them with salt, then wiping them clean with paper towels.

Around the home:
• We’ve all seen the ugly watermarks on wood furniture caused by water from glasses or bottles. Restore your wood to its original beauty with a paste of salt and salad oil. Just apply a thin coating to the stain, let sit for awhile, then wipe away.
• Make brass sparkle with a paste comprised of equal parts of salt, flour and vinegar. Rub the paste on the brass item, leave on for an hour or so, then clean with a soft cloth or brush and buff with a dry cloth.

Spices

Around the home:
• For the homey, delicious scent of home baked goods without actually having to bake, simmer a mixture of allspice, cloves and cinnamon in water on your stovetop.

Lemons

In the kitchen:
• Does the inside of your microwave look like last week’s pasta dinner exploded all over? Simply place a bowl of water and lemon slices in the center and nuke it on high for 3 minutes. Then remove the bowl and wipe down the inside with a sponge.
• Give your home a fresh, clean scent: Bake lemon slices on a cookie sheet in
a 175°F oven for 4 to 6 hours, and then add to your potpourri.
• Make copper shine by pouring salt onto half of a lemon and gently scrubbing.

Olive Oil

Around the home:
• Mix ½ teaspoon olive oil and ¼ cup vinegar or fresh lemon juice in a
glass jar. Dab a soft rag into the solution and polish wood surfaces with it.

White Distilled Vinegar

In the kitchen:
• The next time your sink or tub is stopped up, try this three-step natural fix: Start by pouring baking soda down the drain, then follow up with vinegar. A quick rinse of boiling water should have that drain flowing again
in no time.
• Make your glasses sparkle and remove hard water stains by running white vinegar through the dishwasher.
• Clean your coffee maker by running
1 cup distilled white vinegar through the normal cycle. Then follow up with a couple of pots of plain water before you brew again.

In the bathroom:
• Skip the chemical-based mold and mildew cleaners in favor of straight vinegar, which will kill 82 percent of mold. Just put some in a spray bottle and attack any moldy or mildewed areas. The same goes for the rim of your toilet bowl!

In the laundry:
• Soften clothes and remove hard water mineral deposits by adding
½ cup white vinegar to your washing machine’s rinse cycle.

Around the home:
• For floors, just mop clean with
a mixture of ½ cup distilled white vinegar and 1 gallon warm water.
It’s especially effective on linoleum floors.
• Finding it tough to wash your windows without unsightly streaks? Just combine 2 teaspoons distilled white vinegar with
1 quart water, then spray on windows.
Your secret, streak-free weapon: Wipe them clean with newspapers.
• Stubborn adhesives and labels will come right off when they’ve been soaked in vinegar.

Club Soda

In the kitchen:
• We all have a cupboard filled with coffee and tea-stained mugs that aren’t fit for company. Take them out of hiding! They’ll look brand new after a one-hour soak in club soda. Fill cups with club soda, let sit, then empty
and rub clean with paper towels.

In the laundry:
• Grease stains on fabrics can seem impossible to remove. Club soda can help; pour some on the stain and rub gently before laundering.

In the car:
• See better when you drive by cleaning your windshield with club soda. Keep
a spray bottle of it in your car and watch how quickly it works!

Around the home:
• Remove carpet stains by soaking them with club soda. Then voila! Blot with a towel, and the stain will be history.
• Diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires will gain extra sparkle and sheen when they’re placed in a bowl of club soda overnight.
• Loosen rusty nails and bolts by pouring club soda over them. The fizzy action simply bubbles the rust away.
• Hate that chlorine smell — and ugly greenish tint — in your hair after a day at the pool? Give your tresses a club soda rinse for sweet-smelling, shiny locks.
