The Best Locally-Grown Fruits and
Vegetables
Explore the picturesque country roads of the beautiful, fertile Connecticut
River Valley, and you’re likely to see plenty of family-owned farms.
They’re the places where just about every type of fruit and vegetable
you can think of is grown to delicious perfection and they’re right
here in our own backyard. We think it’s the best stuff on Earth.
That’s why we’ve worked to bring that fresh, homegrown goodness
right to you by partnering with local farms. You’ll find their just-harvested,
in-season fruits and vegetables at Big Y. We’re proud to offer nothing
but the best to our customers, and we’re excited to have found so
many nearby growers who share our philosophy.
Big Y’s Family Favorites
Massachusetts and Connecticut are home to some of the best farms
in New England, if not the country. At Big Y, we’re so pleased to
be able to share their produce with our customers. Here are just a few
of the local growers we’re proud to work with.
Lyman Orchards, Middlefield, CT:
Family owned since 1741, Lyman Orchards raises a wide variety of
seasonal fruits and vegetables — everything from apples to pumpkins.
For more than 260 years, they’ve been committed to preserving the
land for future generations, while also growing the best possible produce.
They’re also the only place on the East Coast that produces jostaberries — tart,
dark purple gems that are available for just two weeks in mid-July.
E. Cecchi Farm, Feeding Hills, MA:
Big Y has been getting delicious vegetables — especially tomatoes,
summer squash, corn and cabbage — from the Cecchi family for more
than 60 years. Because their produce is picked and trucked to stores every
single day, it’s guaranteed to be incredibly fresh when it reaches
your table.
Plainville Farms, Hadley, MA:
For three generations, Plainville Farms has perfected growing and
harvesting butternut squash. It’s selected, sliced, peeled, packaged
and shipped out to Big Y stores daily, so it’s not only as fresh
as can be, but the hard work of preparation has already been done!
Happy Valley Organics, Whately, MA:
This all-organic farm supplies lettuce, peppers, potatoes, squash
and herbs to Big Y. Once they’re harvested, they’re on the
shelves at Big Y the very next day.
Rose’s Berry Farm, South Glastonbury, CT:
The Rose family has been cultivating their 100-plus acre farm since
1908, specializing in (you guessed it!) all types of berries, as
well as apples, pumpkins and other seasonal items.
Meadowbrook Farms,
East Longmeadow, MA:
In the early 1980s, John Burney began farming part time, operating
a “pick your own” strawberry field while also working as a
farm credit banker. As his love of farming intensely grew, John knew
he wanted to become a full-time farmer. In 1990, John did just that
and grows many delicious fruits and vegetables on an incredible 175 acres
of land. Sweet summer corn, crisp cabbage and juicy strawberries are some
of the specialties of this family-owned farm.
Calabrese Farms, Southwick, MA:
In 1948, the Calabrese Farm was started by Joe and Eleanor Calabrese.
Today, the farm is operated by a second generation. Many different
crops, such as sweet corn, peppers, tomatoes, pumpkins and winter
squashes, are grown on their 150-acre picturesque farm. The 80,000-square
feet of greenhouse space is used for bedding plants and sowing their main
crops, and you can find many of their fresh vegetables at your local Big
Y.
Dzen Tree Farm, South Windsor, CT:
To really focus on quality and value, Dzen Tree Farm puts its main
focus on strawberries and blueberries, growing several acres of each.
Fair Weather Farms, Rocky Hill, CT:
Spanning three generations, Fair Weather Farms started in 1910, by
William A. Collins, as a dairy farm. The dairy farm continued until
the late 1950s, at which time the family began growing green beans.
With a growing interest in beans, the family increased the crop to an enormous
625 acres and William Collins became the largest green bean grower
in the Northeast. Today, Fair Weather Farms is one of the largest
growers of green beans in the country, supplying Big Y with their snapping-crisp,
super-fresh wax and green beans.
At Big Y we’re commited to working with locally-grown businesses
and farmers. We support CISA, Harvest New England and Connecticut Grown.
