Understanding Big Y’s NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System
Every time you wheel a cart down the aisles of Big Y, you’re making choice after choice. White or wheat bread? Whole milk or skim? Chicken or pork? Chips or pretzels? Chances are, you make most of these choices without even really thinking, walking through the store a little bit on auto-pilot. Now, Big Y is introducing a new system that will make it unbelievably easy for you to make sure those split-second choices are as good as they can be for your family: It’s called NuVal.™ And it will give you simple, at-a-glance information you can use as you’re shopping for your family.
What Is NuVal™?
The goal of the NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System is to help Americans improve their overall health by making smarter choices at the grocery store. Put together by a team of doctors and researchers, NuVal™ provides just about every food item in the store with a score from 1 to 100. The higher the score, the better nutritional value of the item.
How Does NuVal™ Work?
You might think that the nutrition labels on your favorite foods tells you the whole story. But there are many vitamins, minerals and nutrients that aren’t included on the average label. The scientists behind NuVal™ developed a system that takes into account more than 30 different nutrients and other factors. This system takes the numerator, which is comprised of nutrients that positively impact health (fiber, calcium, etc.) and the denominator, which is comprised of nutrients that negatively impact health (trans and saturated fat, sodium, etc.) in each food and distills that information into an easy-to-understand nutritional value from 1 to 100. One glance at this number lets you know how nutritionally valuable any single food is. It’s that simple.
Know the Score!
You’ll find the NuVal™ score for each food front and center on the shelf labels for each product, right next to the price. We’ll also include it on in-store signage. It’s easy to see, a snap to read and simple to understand. Now, you have the ability to compare the nutritional value of similar items the same way
you compare prices. Making those snap-decision choices will not only be simpler, they’ll be smarter.
