Smart Tips for Stretching Your Seafood Budget
Today we’re all trying to stretch every dollar, whether we’re
renting movies from the library, enjoying a “stay-cation” at
home or cooking for our families more. Finding delicious, nutritious
foods that fit into a budget-conscious menu plan can certainly be a challenge.
What you may not have considered before is that seafood can be one
of the cornerstones of a frugalista’s family menu. Yes, seafood.
And we’re
not just talking about fish sticks, either! It’s easy to add a wide
variety of seafood to your shopping list when you know the best bargain-hunting
tricks. Here are a few of our favorites.
Be ready to try something new. Limiting yourself to only the most expensive seafood is like refusing to eat any beef but filet mignon! There are plenty of less expensive selections that are just as tasty and just as good for you. They may require a different type of preparation or seasoning, but by expanding your horizons you are sure to discover some new favorites.
Learn how to stretch. Adding rice, pasta or vegetables to your seafood dishes enables you to make a little bit of a more expensive ingredient go a much longer way. Look for recipes like seafood pasta, risotto or even stews. By combining your fish or shellfish with flavorful and nutritious “fillers,” you not only add texture and flavor to your food, but you stretch your food dollar.
Shop seasonally. Talk to the seafood experts at Big Y to find out what’s in season at your store. Certain items will be better bargains at different times of the year when they are more plentiful. Dungeness crabs, for example, are generally less expensive in December when their season begins.
Don’t fear the freezer. Frozen seafood can be your gateway to seafood that can be more costly when purchased fresh - whether it’s out of season or simply harder to get. Shrimp, in particular, fare well when frozen.
Watch
the sales. Keep an eye on your Big Y circular for sales on your
favorite seafood items. Then you can fill your freezer when the price is
right.
