They’re also the only place on the east coast that produces Jostaberries — tart, dark purple gems that are available for just two weeks in mid-July. You’ll also find dripping-juicy, ultra-sweet native New England peaches here, available only in the Connecticut River Valley area during their short, five-week growing season — they’re picked and sold on the very same day. For three generations, Plainville Farm has perfected growing and harvesting butternut squash. It’s selected, sliced, peeled, packaged and shipped out to Big Y stores daily, so it’s not only as fresh as can be, but the hard work of preparation has already been done! The Czajkowski family also knows that good soil quality is crucial to producing high-quality foods, so they are devoted not only to growing the best possible produce, but to ensuring that their fields are in better condition every year.

Happy Valley Organic Cooperative, Whately, MA - This all-organic farming cooperative represents four different small farmers working together to share resources without competing for business. Combined, their 225 acres of farmland produce such diverse items as lettuce, peppers, potatoes, squash and herbs for Big Y. Once harvested, it’s on the shelves at Big Y the very next day.

Meadowbrook Farm, East Longmeadow, MA - In the early 1980s, John Burney started a part-time “pick your own” strawberry field. He soon discovered his love for farming — and parlayed that into 175-acre Meadowbrook Farm. Sweet summer corn, red ripe tomatoes, crisp cabbage, summer melons and juicy strawberries are some of this family-owned farm’s specialties.
