- Cannas and Gladiolus
Transplant evergreens and perennials
Start annuals in flats to cover late-summer bare spots in flower beds
Sow warm season vegetables and herbs. Start Brussels sprouts and cabbage family plants in flats for fall crops.
CHORES AND MAINTENANCE
- Water newly planted trees and shrubs. When rain is lacking, water deeply every 7 to 10 days. Prune deciduous and evergreen hedges, spring flowering trees and shrubs, and wisteria after it blooms. Do not prune summer - or -fall-bloomers now or flowers buds will be lost
Dig and divide crowded late-spring blooming bulbs after flowering. Continue to deadhead spent bulbs; remove matured foliage with gentle tug when it separates from bulb.
Protect ripening berries from birds by covering with netting.
During hot summer weather, remove cool-season plants such as radish, spinach, and lettuce as they bolt or form seed stalks.
In the vegetable garden: Pinch back annual herbs and thin basil. Pull and compost spent crops. Be prepared to protect basil, eggplants, peppers, and tomatoes, if threatened by late frost. Check vegetables on trellises and poles. Prune tomato plants. Keep vegetables and berry straw, chopped corn cobs, bark chips, shred paper or grass clippings
INDOORS
- Houseplants require more frequent watering and fertilization. Indoor plants can be moved outdoors to shady locations, but be sure to monitor their watering needs.
TOOL TIP
- Instead of a heavy, traditional garden spade, try a border spade. With its narrow blade, you can dig between plants in herbaceous borders and shrub beds. You can also use it set in plants, bulbs, and seedlings.
Try a three-spike-wheel ground hawg to work large areas and wide garden rows. It's perfect for tilling both sides of a row at once without harming the plants.
