Care Tips for Mums

Plant the mums in your flower bed at the same depth that they were growing in its pot and mulch it to help stabilize soil moisture and temperature. Be especially sure that they have sufficient moisture as they go into the winter. A lot of root growth will occur, even after the tops have gone dormant.

Plant mums in a half day to full sun location for optimal blooming. Keep the soil very slightly moist and do not over-water. They are virtually disease free, but do watch out for aphids on the new growth. One trick is to "de-bud" 50-75% of the buds. This will let the plant force fewer but much larger and showier blooms

If you plan on using them as perennials, be sure to give them adequate space. They can grow and multiply rather quickly. Many people choose to grow them as fall "annuals" and tossing them out soon after blooming. That way they don't have to prune next season or can put other flowers in the same location.

Either way, the Garden Mum cannot be beaten for beautiful fall color.
