Serving Cheese Trays

We at Big Y thought it might be helpful if we answered some commonly asked questions about Cheese. Cheese platters are a delicious and healthy hors d'oeuvre.

Q: What is the best temperature to serve a cheese tray?
A: Room temperature. The flavor of cheese is best when served at room temperature. Remove your platter from refrigeration 1 1/2 to 2 hours before serving time Soft cheeses need a shorter time.

Q: How should Cheese be refrigerated?
A: Cheese should be kept refrigerated at temperatures 35 to 40 degrees F if possible in the original wrapping or container. Waxed paper, foil, plastic or plastic bags can also be used if wrapped tightly.

Q: What is the best way to melt cheese?
A: The best way to melt cheese is to cut the cheese in small pieces or use a shredded cheese. Low heat and a constant stir. High heat will make the cheese tough and stringy. If using it in a recipe or sauce, add it as the last ingredient.

Q: How long can you keep cheese?
A: General rule of thumb! - the harder the cheese, the longer it will remain fresh. Softer cheese should be eaten soon after they are opened. Larger pieces of cheese if stored properly, will normally stay fresher longer than shredded cheese.
