ete Rogers, our green coffee buyer, took his first trip to a coffee source country in 1986. This trip to Guatemala opened his eyes to the abject poverty of many of the coffee growing regions in Central and South America. From that moment he knew he wanted to help out these extremely poor workers, but was unclear how to do it. He knew that if he could buy a whole crop from one farmer he would have more pull and could put a program together with the farm to enhance existing programs and implement new ones.
It wasn't until 1994 that the Big Y and Rogers Family were able to put all the pieces together and begin the foundation of this program. As with any program we have had some success and some failure, but we keep working, and adapting the program to benefit each farm and situation.
