Based in Springfield, Massachusetts, Big Y® is one of the fastest growing retail supermarket chains in the United States, currently operating more than 55 locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut and holds a market share in the Springfield metro area of 34%.

As one of the largest privately owned supermarket in the region since 1936, Big Y employs over 9,000 people in its stores, warehouses and Store Support Center.

Big Y ranked 303rd in the 2006 Forbes Top 500 Largest Private Companies and holds the third highest share of market percentage in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.

Big Y has been a leader in innovation in the supermarket industry in several areas ranging from its human resources policies to the development of its Express Savings ClubTM electronic discount program to the educational outreach programs within the communities it serves.

Big Y is also known for its community involvement and spirit from amongst all of the other supermarket chains in the area. Big Y's "Education Express" program has awarded over 11 Million dollars in much needed equipment to over 2000 schools in Big Y's marketing area.

In 1993, Big Y launched the Homework Helpline, a toll free telephone tutoring service staffed by qualified teachers who guide students and parents through homework questions. In addition, since 1981 Big Y has awarded 2,000 scholarships for more than $1.5 Million to its employees and their dependents as well as to customers and customers' dependents through several annual scholarship programs.

Since 1990, Big Y has acquired ten stores, remodeled 30 stores and built 25 new stores and also introduced the first World Class Market in 1993, which was the first of it's kind in the area. Big Y also operates Table & Vine/Town & Country which offers fine wine, liquor and gourmet food, boasting the largest temperature-controlled wine cellars on the East Coast of the United States.

Big Y's 185,000 square foot distribution center allows the company to stay on the leading edge of food distribution. With 34 acres, the location also houses the produce distribution center, facilities maintenance, with a staff well trained in trades such as HVAC, carpentry, electrical, machine repair, telephones and alarms, and the Store Support Center.
