Big Y® arrived in Springfield in 1967. A year later, with six locations, Big Y acquired the Jumbo Supermarket chain of seven stores. By October of 1968, the chain had more than doubled in size. The second generation of D'Amours began 
working at Big Y as management moved into a floor of offices in Chicopee. With the acquisition of two PopularSupermarkets in 1972, Big Y was now in Longmeadow and the Sixteen Acres area of Springfield as well.
