Big Y's Easy Guide to Roasting Chestnuts in the Oven

Start with 1 1/2 pounds fresh chestnuts. Rinse with cold water.

Soak chestnuts in lukewarm water for about 30 minutes to soften the shells.

With a serrated knife, cut an "X" through the rounded part of the shell. This keeps it from exploding while roasting in the oven.

Place chestnuts in a single layer on a cookie sheet.

Bake at 475 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until the shells peel back and nuts are tender.

Mound the nuts in the center of a clean kitchen towel and draw up edges into a pouch.

Squeeze the pouch a few times to loosen shells. Let sit for about 10-12 minutes.

Peel the chestnuts gently to remove shells.
