The Science Behind NuVal® Scores

An independent panel of nutrition and medical experts from leading universities and health organizations led by Dr. David Katz of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center in Derby, CT developed the science behind NuVal Scores. No funding or input was provided by manufacturers or special interest groups, so you can be sure the guidance provided by the NuVal Scoring System is unbiased. Therefore, Big Y offers NuVal Scores to make your shopping experience better, but we do not influence the Scores you see in our stores in any way.

NuVal Scores incorporate more than the information from the Nutrition Facts panel. The Score considers ingredients and over thirty factors and their role on your overall health. The numerator consists of favorable components such as vitamins, minerals and fiber and the denominator consists of less favorable components such as added sodium, added sugar and trans fat. The more favorable components, the higher a food's NuVal Score tends to be. The less favorable components, the lower a food's NuVal Score tends to be.
