World Class Leadership Development

As a manager's ability to connect with their employees to better develop a fully engaged workforce grows in importance for our organization, Big Y has developed a multi-tiered Leadership Development Program to address our future leaders at their various stages of development.

From a program we call "Supermarket 101- Emerging Leaders", to our Department Manager and Store Director training programs, Big Y has designed training programs meant to address the individual needs of each participant.

Learning is twofold. Our leadership based training is meant to provide participants with a firm understanding of Big Y’s mission and values, while technical training is shaped specifically to meet the knowledge base and level of experience of every candidate.

Participants learn through a combination of activities; on the job, through workshops presented in a classroom setting, computer based training, one on one with subject matter experts, and may include some special assignments sprinkled in along the way.

Many of these learning opportunities are validated through quizzes on Big Y's learning management system, called the "Big Y Learning Hub" with Learning Centers in every location. Each and every employee has a learning plan based on his or her job function or individual development needs. Big Y uses a blended approach of computer based and hands on training to prepare employees for their job duties.

Big Y University (BYU) delivers numerous opportunities for employees to learn through various methods that may include: workshops, computer based training, recipe-style technical manuals and cards, traditional training manuals, outside seminars and formal training, home study, Internet, videos, audio tapes, and literature.

Store Director Trainee Selection and Development

This program utilizes a comprehensive assessment and selection process to choose individuals who apply for the position of Store Director Trainee. Combined with a customized learning plan, employees experience an extensive leadership development program that offers valuable opportunities for professional and personal growth.

Media Library

The Media Library is a resourceful way for employees to both further their education, broaden understanding and develop skills. Topics include: Coaching, Communication, Leadership and Career Development and Time Management. It even contains materials on personal interests and wellness. The Course Catalog can be easily accessed through the News Page on the Learning HUB.
