Ronald McDonald House of Springfield Announces Major Gift Donation From Big Y

Charles D’Amour, COO and President of Big Y, was joined by Ronald McDonald House of Springfield Board Members, Jim Dreikorn and John Glenn, in presenting a check for $25,000 for the rehabilitation of the Library at the Ronald McDonald House located at 34 Chapin Terrace in Springfield. Mr. D’Amour noted Big Y’s continuing commitment to the Springfield community and especially to its most vulnerable citizens.

Speaking on behalf of the Springfield Ronald McDonald House, Board member Jim Dreikorn, remarked, “This leadership gift by Big Y allows us to continue the complete refurbishment of the Ronald McDonald House of Springfield. After 25 years and serving over 11,000 family nights, our House needs to have every room refurbished. Thank you to Charlie D’Amour and everyone at Big Y”.

Mr. Dreikorn and Mr. Glenn also encouraged individuals and groups to visit the House and consider volunteering. They noted that the House has a very small staff and is dependent on many volunteers to help welcome and assist families, cook meals as part of a corporate team building exercise or help maintain the property.

The mission of the Ronald McDonald House of Springfield is to provide a temporary “home away from home” for families of children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals and healthcare facilities. Since 1991, when the Ronald McDonald House opened its doors, families have received support services while in the comfort of a home-like environment. The 21-bedroom house offers families the privacy of their own bedroom and bath, a large communal kitchen to prepare their meals, a large dining area, TV room, play room, library and laundry room.

After 25 years of hosting families, our guest rooms are showing signs of wear and tear; and all our bathrooms need updating to provide handicapped accessibility, as many of our visiting children are wheelchair-bound. In order to address these critical needs, we are embarking on a Room Makeover Campaign to raise the needed funds to update our 21 guest rooms and bathrooms, and we are off to a very good start. Of the $1 million required to complete the work, we have already raised $350,000. We would love to speak with interested persons about participating in our Campaign. Please contact Rosemarie Zello at 794-9730 to learn how you can help.
