Pittsfield Big Y Is Reborn

Big Y Foods, Inc. is pleased to announce the completion of the renovations at their Pittsfield, MA World Class Market at 200 West St. This past $ 7.9 million renovation effort began last September and included major renovations in all areas of the store including many new additions in response to changing customer needs. The market was also expanded by 1510 square feet with adjacent space vacated by a former liquor store. The now 58,300 square foot market was acquired from former Adams Supermarkets 30 years ago in 1984 along with 4 other markets within Berkshire County. This location has undergone several renovations throughout its history and was last updated in 1995.

To help celebrate their 30th anniversary in Berkshire County, Big Y completed renovations to their Adams and North Adams markets last fall and in Great Barrington 2008. In all, over the past 6 years, Big Y has invested over $43 million in their Berkshire county locations which includes one new store in Lee, and significant upgrades to the other four. In addition, last fall, Big Y opened the first Big Y Express fuel and convenience location in partnership with F.L. Roberts & Co. at the crossroads of the Massachusetts Turnpike and Rt. 20.

Every corner of the Pittsfield Big Y has been touched by renovation from new flooring, paint, equipment and fixtures to a brand new sushi department complete with on -site sushi chef. Every department has been upgraded to offer even more selection and variety than ever before. And there is a new olive and anti-pasta bar as well as hot soups, more freshly prepared sandwiches and grinders, more pastries, breads and cupcakes on display and an even greater selection of cheeses than ever before. There is also a larger variety of over 300 gluten free selections along with over 700 natural and organic items. Even the Big Y Pharmacy and Wellness Center has moved within the market's space to make it more accessible to shoppers.

Veteran store director, Kevin Grise, will continue to manage this store. He has been with Big Y for almost 30 years. He started as a dairy department manager in their Great Barrington market in 1986 before being promoted to other management positions and eventually to store manager.

A June 6th opening event is being planned with complimentary samples of Big Y's celebration cake, coffee, donuts and other refreshments along with store-wide product samples. An official cake cutting ceremony is planned for 10:30AM where local and state officials are expected to participate. The celebration will continue throughout the next week with free samples of sushi, hot soups, super chicken tenders, World Classics turkey, Berkshire Breads, new cheeses, chicken salad and more.
